Climate Action Plan 2026
We Produce Content with Purpose for the Visitor Economy
What we mean by ‘purpose’ is two-fold:
-
Minimising or Eliminating Carbon
-
Providing Positive Impacts to Biodiversity and Local Community Empowerment
We have two strands to our business:
-
Media production through words, photos and film, as set out at the URL greentraveller.com. Our clients are mostly Tourist Boards (Regional & National), Agencies – Governmental and Non-Governmental, Tour Operators and other travel companies
-
A consumer-facing online publication providing information for consumers on how to travel in a greener way, as set out at the URL greentraveller.co.uk. Our audience is from across all ages and demographics, though are less likely to be those seeking budget experiences
We aim to address Climate Action in the following two ways:
Minimising or Eliminating Carbon
The Office
-
Greentraveller works mostly from home, using a shared studio one day a week
-
Greentraveller’s home uses low energy lighting/biomass heating devices
-
Greentraveller’s studio at the Glove Factory Studios, Wiltshire – a hub for like-minded creatives where we share best practice in low carbon travel – Greentraveller’s Richard Hammond has given talks on low carbon travel to the other members to encourage behavioural change in other businesses
-
Greentraveller drives to its studio once a week in an electric car where it charges during the day for the return journey
Travel to Productions in the UK
-
Greentraveller does not have a company vehicle
-
Greentraveller uses an electric car to drive to a railway station to attend meetings in the UK
-
Greentraveller’s hires electric cars to travel on productions where rail travel is not feasible
-
Travel to Productions outside the UK:
-
Greentraveller travels by train where possible to overseas destinations, recent filming trips have included southern French Alps (out on train back on sleeper train), and Flixbus to Les Arcs - the first B Corps mountain resort in Europe.
-
Where not possible to travel overland, Greentraveller flies direct (where possible), in economy class to promote travel that has a tangible benefit to local communities. An example of this in 2025 for a filming trip to Saint Lucia with Josephine Price, a respected travel writer (previously digital editor of National Geographic Traveller magazine) where we focussed on community-based conservation travel experiences across the island, and in 2024 for a filming trip to Belize with Meera Dattani, a respected travel writer where we focussed on community-based conservation travel experiences.
Website and Magazine
-
Greentraveller’s operates two websites, both hosted by Wix.com
-
Greentraveller’s magazine is online only
We will continue to seek ways to reduce the carbon emissions of our work.
This means:
-
Continuing to use lower carbon forms of transport for our shoots, by train where possible, otherwise by electric car
-
Continuing to avoid unnecessary business travel with e-meets, webinars, and phone calls.
-
Continuing to reduce our annual travel related emissions by trying where possible to use local photographers rather than sending out photographers from the UK to shoots overseas
-
Continuing to encourage our clients to reduce their carbon footprint where possible
2. Advocacy
Since 2006 (as a blog) and since 2009 (as an information-rich online publication), Greentraveller has sought to promote holidays that can be reached without flying. We worked with over 30 tour operators to fillet out those trips that could be reached overland and promoted these to our audience.
Since 2014, we have sought to further promote a green way to travel by producing films that shine a light on a more thoughtful, considerate kind of tourism that has less of an impact on the environment, protects, conserves and enhances biodiversity, respects unique and ancient cultures, traditions and communities, whilst providing fair working conditions, employment, and provides a positive impact on local community empowerment.
Our Executive Producer Richard Hammond frequently provides talks, webinars and moderates conferences on sustainable travel, recent and forthcoming examples include:
1. 2025: Launching a sustainable travel podcast for the travel industry co-hosted with travel writer Holly Tuppen, sponsored by Lemongrass Marketing.
